Osoyoos Lake, Beach & Watersports

The water at Osoyoos Lake feels different the moment you step in. It’s warmer than any other freshwater lake in Canada, and by late June it holds onto that warmth for the rest of summer. Ask a local and this is usually the first thing they’ll tell you about the area.

Osoyoos Lake

The lake runs 14.7 km north to south through Osoyoos and crosses the border into Washington State, splitting itself between two countries. From late June through September, temperatures climb to 24-26°C, turning it into more of a bath than a swim. That warmth is what sets Osoyoos Lake apart from every other lake in the Okanagan, and it’s exactly what makes paddleboarding at sunrise, kayaking with the kids or floating for an hour before lunch feel effortless rather than bracing. Add the sandy beaches, the vineyard views rising off the shoreline and the mountains behind them, and Osoyoos Lake earns its place as the Okanagan’s premier freshwater beach destination.

Osoyoos Beach & Swimming

Osoyoos Beach starts right outside Watermark’s door, no car required. Step off the property and onto sand that stays warm well into the evening. From there, a whole run of beaches and lakeside parks stretches out in both directions, each with its own personality.

Water conditions stay calm, warm and sandy-bottomed for nearly the whole season in Osoyoos. Therefore a beach day works for every age and ability from late May through early October. Pair a beach day with the pool and on-property amenities for the ultimate day in the sun.

Gyro Beach

Right beside Watermark, at the bottom of Main Street, sits Gyro Beach, the largest beach in Osoyoos. It has a wide sandy area, shady trees for when the sun gets to be a lot, shallow entry for kids and a floating dock for the more adventurous swimmers. A paved walkway runs above the beach, and a wheelchair ramp and Mobi-Mat open up water access through the summer months. With free parking, public washrooms and the whole downtown core a few minutes’ walk away, this is the easiest beach day you’ll have in Osoyoos.

Cottonwood Park

About 1 km east of Watermark, a 15 minute walk along the beach walk or a 3 minute drive, Cottonwood Beach sits right beside the Sage Pub & Liquor Store. The beach’s shallow water reaches far into the lake, which makes it a favourite for families with younger kids, and the grassy area behind it has colourful gardens and a paved, wheelchair-friendly walkway for a stroll after your swim. One thing to know: this stretch faces full sun with little shade, so bring an umbrella if you’re staying all day.

Legion Beach

About 1 km southwest of the resort, a 12 minute walk or a short drive, Legion Beach is Osoyoos’ dog beach. A grassy, shaded section is set aside just for dog swimming, separate from the main swim area, which is more gravel than sand. Large shade trees, picnic tables, a boat launch and ample parking round it out, along with a Mobi-Mat and accessible washroom in summer. The town’s splash park sits right at the parking area too, open to everyone except pets. If you’re travelling with a dog, or just want a quieter beach than Gyro, this is the one.

Osoyoos Lake Regional Park

For a bigger stretch of sand and a bit more elbow room, head about 3.7 km southeast to Osoyoos Lake Regional Park, on the east side of the lake near the US border, about a 7 minute drive from Watermark. Shady trees line a large sandy beach, with washrooms, picnic tables and plenty of parking. It’s less about a quick dip and more about settling in for the day, with views south toward Washington State thrown in.

Goodman Park & Beach

About 1.8 km southeast of Watermark, roughly a 4 minute drive, Goodman Park sits along Lakeshore Drive at Bayview Crescent, on the walking and biking path that traces the lake’s east side. It’s sandy, dog-friendly and comes with benches, picnic tables and full-service washrooms, all set against a backdrop of vineyard views. It’s a quieter, more residential stretch of shoreline, good for a low-key swim without the crowds of the main beaches.

Lions Park

About 0.7 km north of the resort, a 10 minute walk on a quiet one-way street, Lions Park leans more playground than beach. Slides and swings for a range of ages, a little free library and a public boat launch make it a good stop for families with younger kids who want to burn energy between swims. The beach alongside is rockier than sandy, better for skipping stones than sandcastles, and parking is limited, so aim for an early start in peak season.

sẁiẁs Provincial Park (Haynes Point)

About 2 km south of Watermark, a 5 minute drive, sẁiẁs Provincial Park sits on a narrow spit of land that reaches nearly across the lake. Renamed in 2015 to reflect its traditional Okanagan place name, meaning roughly “narrowing of the waters,” sẁiẁs has a day-use area with picnic tables near the entrance and a campground further out along the point, warm shallow water that extends well into the lake and a walkable path out to the tip for the view. It’s family and pet-friendly, and it’s popular, so arrive early if you’re hoping to camp out for the day.

Between the beaches runs the Osoyoos beach walk, a waterfront promenade that’s just as good for an evening stroll as it is for a shortcut between swim spots.

Water Activities On Osoyoos Lake

Osoyoos Lake supports a full run of water activities, from stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking to boat rentals, jet skis, water-skiing, tubing, flyboarding, boat tours, sailing and the Wibit inflatable water park, plus fishing from shore or by boat.

Paddleboarding & Kayaking

Mornings are the move. The lake sits flat and clear before the afternoon wind picks up, and conditions suit first-timers as much as experienced paddlers. Walk over to Fun 4 Rent‘s kiosk right on Gyro Beach for a board or a kayak on the spot. Wakepilot and ATB Watersports also rent SUPs and kayaks from their own locations around the lake. Boat Rentals & Pontoon Days

This is the lake’s signature activity, and for good reason. A full-day pontoon rental turns into a floating picnic for the whole family, while a speedboat covers the entire 14.7 km stretch in an afternoon. Lakefront Marina, on Main Street, and Wakepilot, with several locations around the lake including Desert Sunrise Marina, both run full fleets of pontoons and runabouts. Jet Skiing

Open water and warm conditions make this one of the lake’s biggest draws for thrill-seekers, and the learning curve is short enough for first-timers too. Lakefront Marina rents jet skis by the hour or the day. Rental availability shifts through the season, so call ahead to ensure your water adventure.

Water-Skiing & Tubing

Long, open stretches of the lake are built for tow sports. Bring the whole group along. ATB Watersports runs all-inclusive towed watersports packages, from wakeboarding and water-skiing to kneeboarding and tubing, with a certified driver and coach included. Whether it’s one skier or a tube full of kids trailing behind, the water’s warm enough that a fall barely registers.

Flyboarding

If you haven’t seen it before, flyboarding straps you to a water-powered jet that lifts you several metres above the lake’s surface, part surfing, part flying. Lakefront Marina runs flyboarding sessions right from their Main Street location. Osoyoos Lake’s warm, calm water makes it a forgiving place to try it for the first time.

Boat Tours & Sunset Cruises

A guided tour is the easiest way to see the whole 14.7 km lake without doing the driving yourself, and a sunset cruise turns that into an evening out. Spirit Beach Watersports, based at Spirit Beach, runs sunset cruises if you’d rather let someone else do the steering. Time it right and close the night at 15 Park, looking out over the water’s edge.

Sailing

The Lake Osoyoos Sailing Club keeps the lake’s steady summer winds well used. Conditions favour beginners as much as experienced sailors, and with lessons for both youth and adults, it’s worth checking in with the club directly for current programming.

Wibit Inflatable Water Park

Splash BC runs a floating obstacle course on Osoyoos Lake each season, complete with towers, slides and balance beams. It’s built for every age, and it’s a different kind of lake day than a rental or a tour. Check Okanagan Wibit for this season’s dates and pricing.

Fishing

Osoyoos Lake holds bass, trout and salmon, and you can fish it from the shore or from a boat. It’s an underrated side of the lake that most visitors never think to try. Please keep in mind that anyone planning to fish must have a valid BC Freshwater Fishing License.

Don’t Move A Mussel

Watermark sits on this lake, so keeping it clean isn’t a rule we follow, it’s a commitment we’ve made. That’s why we support Don’t Move a Mussel, the province-wide effort to keep invasive zebra and quagga mussels out of BC waters.

The protocol is simple: Clean, Drain, Dry. Rinse your watercraft, drain any standing water and let it dry fully before launching anywhere new. Since May 2024, it’s also BC law to transport any watercraft with the drain plug removed, and every out-of-province boat entering BC must stop at a mussel inspection station along the way.
